Jan 10th 2011!⃝ I maybe read too much into this song. But here is what it meant for me.
The Irish are known for almost being born with a sense they they will have to pay for each and every transgression in this life. The person in the song can only "Leave this world alive" if there is something beyond this world.
To me, it is about death and facing your own mortality. While none of us can know what is on the other side or even if there is another side, this is one person (neither man nor woman) saying that, if there is something else beyond this life, you can bet I will do my best to look out for my loved ones. And to those I have offended, scorned, hurt or maligned, I will stand up and confess all.
In other words, I don't know if there will be a God or heaven, but if there is, I will do the best I can to comfort you. So please don't weep for me, a sinner, I will get what I deserve for sure, but will make something good come of my wretched life in the end.
