"Long May You Run" was a loving tribute to the first car teenage Neil Young ever owned: an old Buick station wagon that had once been used as a hearse by a funeral parlor!

Neil drove that car for years, and had a lot of fun in it. By the time he wrote this song, in 1974, he hadn't seen this car in a decade... but he still had fond memories of the car, and was telling that car "Long may you run," or "I hope you're still working and SOMEONE somewhere is still driving you and having great times in you."
